Home Safety Tips During the COVID-19 Pandemic

If you're like most of us, you're probably isolating yourself at home during this COVID-19 pandemic. We have some tips for you to keep safe while you're having to stay at home.

1. Do a home security inventory

You may think you're less likely to have a break-in at home since everyone is, well, at home, but that's not necessarily the case. In  Vancouver, both residential and commercial break-ins are up.

This could be because of the severe economic crisis for so many people. So, while you're at home, take a close look at your windows and doors. Do they all close and lock properly? Can people see into your home from outside?

There are some simple things you can do to improve your security at home, such as making it hard to see what you have inside from the outside.

2. Be careful

An estimated 1800 Canadians wind up in the emergency room each year just from falling down. In the home there are plenty of places to have an accident. Now might be a good time to add some grab bars near your bathtub or shower.

Just because you're at home doesn't mean you should become complacent.

3. Watch substance abuse

Whether you're working at home or not, think about things like drinking. Alcohol consumption increases your chances of an accident. It's easy to start having your cocktail at 2:00 P.M. instead of the evening if you're home and bored.

4. don't ignore Domestic abuse

Sadly, domestic abuse appears to be up in most cities as many individuals are stuck at home with their abusers. There are resources to help you if you are in this position. Call 9-1-1 if you feel that you are in immediate danger.
