What's New in State-of-the-Art Surveillance Cameras

State-of-the-art surveillance cameras are improving constantly, just like the capabilities of your smartphone improve with each new model. Also, the price goes down for technology as the technology continues to advance.

So, what’s new? Everything.

Picture

A better picture with higher resolution improves with every brand’s new model. Because, seriously, what good is a camera if you can’t see clearly what’s happening? Surveillance cameras can have night-vision and low-light capabilities, and some even use infrared light.

Connectivity

Surveillance cameras can connect in all kinds of ways. You can tape (and preserve) your video or you can just live stream it, so you can see what’s happening when you feel like taking a look. Most of today’s cameras come with their own apps, so you can operate the camera or watch the feed on your smartphone.

Of course, if you’re using professional-grade surveillance cameras, in a professional and commercial installation, then the camera feed would be manned 24/7. These surveillance cameras can work through your WIFI, they can be wireless, hard-wired, use Ethernet, Bluetooth, Z-Wave, or some proprietary technology.

The feed can also be saved to an SD card (like for your camera) for you to view after the fact. It’s possible to extend the range of your WIFI with an added piece of equipment if necessary. Hook-ups tend to get more sophisticated when you’re using technology for a commercial application as opposed to the amateur wanting to watch his or her dog sleeping during the day.

Weather

For outdoor surveillance cameras, they’re getting sturdier and sturdier. They can withstand extreme heat and cold, rain, snow, sleet, and rapid temperature change.

Like a lot of things in life, you often get what you pay for. So, if you’re living at an Arctic substation, you may need a more expensive surveillance camera to withstand those extreme temperatures.
